Game rules

Please read the following instructions.

  1. The Writing World Cup is a team writing competition. It is possible to sign up individually or with a team.
  2. To participate in the Writing World Cup in any category, the participant must create a user at mundialdeescritura.com.
  3. Once registered for the first time, the user can enter the game, where by default they will be considered registered as an individual player.
  4. If the user wants to create a team to invite other players in, they must assume the role of captain and be the first to register the team (Create team button). If the user wants to join an existing team, he or she has to know the team name. When you request to join that team (Join Team button), the team captain must authorize your entry.
  5. If the user chooses to remain as an individual player he or she will be assigned a team automatically after registration closes, based on age (1st category: up to 12 years old; 2nd category: 13 to 18; 3rd category: 19 or older).
  6. If the user played in the previous edition of the World Cup, when signing in, he or she will continue to belong to the team in which he or she played in that edition. If the player wants to leave the team, he or she must click the Leave team button and will become an individual player. In this instance, the user may choose to: a) remain as an individual player; b) create a team; c) join an existing team.
  7. If the user does not want to play in the current edition of the World Cup, he or she must click the button I do not want to play in the World Cup. If he or she changes their mind later, to play again they have to click the button I want to play in the World Cup. In this case, they will remain as an individual player, and if they want to return to your original team they have to click Join team.
  8. During the first 4 days of registration, all the users who have played in past editions will be listed in the team in which they previously played. As of the fifth day of registration, if these users did not confirm their participation, they will cease to occupy a place in said teams, so that those vacancies can be filled by other players.
  9. If a person wants to sign up for two teams, he or she has to register with two different users (a different email for each one) and sign up for each team with a different user.
  10. If the captain of the team does not confirm the players´ spot at the end of the registration period, unconfirmed players will be registered as individuals and a new team will be assigned.
  11. Teams of less than eight players will be completed with new players to reach ten members. No players will be added to teams of eight players or more. The maximum number of players per team is fourteen players.
  12. During the writing stage of the World Cup, each player over the age of 13 has to write one or more texts of 3000 or more characters with spaces each day, and upload it to the platform corresponding to their group within the World Writing platform. Be careful, it is not 3000 words, it is 3000 characters! Each participant writes texts on their own, without it having to be necessarily related to the texts of their teammates or with their own texts written the day before.
  13. ATTENTION: THEY HAVE TO BE TEXTS WRITTEN THAT DAY. You cannot upload texts written previously. You cannot accumulate texts during the World Cup for other dates. Catch of the day. In the event that the organization detects any sort of cheating, the player will be expelled from the World Cup and will not be able to play again in the future. His or her team will lose the effectiveness corresponding to that player. Here are examples of behaviors that the organization will consider invalid:
  14. Texts that repeat letters, words or paragraphs in series, will not be admitted, if said repetition is meant to add to the amount of characters necessary to reach the minimum requested (3000, general category, 1500 children category).
  15. Texts that count with a proportion of spaces over text greater than 25%, will not be accepted. That is: the sum of characters without spaces over the sum of characters with spaces must not exceed the value 0.75.
  16. In general, texts that, according to the loyal knowledge and understanding of the organization, yield sufficient elements to deduce that they were not written on that day, that is to say that they contravene the spirit and the basic rule of the World Cup, which consists of having to write texts during that day in particular.
  17. Participants who play in the Kids category (up to 12 years old inclusive) have to write one or more texts of 1500 or more characters with spaces each day, and upload it to the platform corresponding to their group within the Writing World Cup platform. Be careful, it's not 1500 words, it's 1500 characters! Each participant writes texts on their own, without it having to be necessarily related to the texts of their teammates or with their own texts written the day before.
  18. Participants between 13 and 18 years old compete in the teenagers category, in which there will be special prizes for the best texts and for the best teams. Participants of this age can also choose to play with adults in mixed teams.
  19. By registering for the Writing World Cup, the user authorizes the World Cup organization to publish the texts produced during the game on its webpage and on social media. The copyrights of the texts, regardless of their publication on the aforementioned platform and on social media, or in future compilations that the organizer may make, will remain the property of their authors, so they will be free to publish them and exercise any other right over them.
  20. Thirteen year olds that want to play in the Kids category (up to 12 years inclusive) with their friends, will be able to do so, but not those who have already reached 14. No person over 13 years of age can be part of the participating groups in the Kids category .
  21. At the time of registration, minors under 18 years of age who want to register must ask their father, mother or tutor to complete all the information on the registration form.
  22. Participants will receive a writing prompt by email every day, which will also be available on the World Cup webpage. Following these instructions is not mandatory, but for the final selection it will sum points that the texts have followed the writing prompt of the day.
  23. “Day” is considered in the World Cup, each calendar day from six in the morning (Argentina time, GMT-3) to six in the morning (Argentina time, GMT-3) of the following calendar day. That is to say: the first "day" runs from November 1st at six in the morning (Argentina time, GMT-3) to Tuesday November 2nd 5:59 in the morning (Argentina time, GMT-3), and so on. We insist: you must upload something written in that period of time, not something previously written.
  24. Participants in all categories will have a day off on Sunday, November 7th. On days off, participants do not receive a writing prompt nor do they have to write, they are free days. This does not change the effectiveness of the teams.
  25. On the third day of the World Cup (Wednesday, November 3rd), all participants who have not participated on either Day 1 or Day 2 of the World Cup (November 1st and 2nd) will automatically be cancelled, and their participation will not be counted (the withdrawal does not harm the team). It is not possible to unsubscribe once the World Cup has started, except by not submitting written texts those first two days.
  26. After this automatic withdrawal, the teams that have ended up with one or two members will be merged with other teams until they form groups of eight to ten people.
  27. Submitting a text: at the end of the writing stage, each participant will have five days (Sunday 7th to Thursday, November 11th) to choose and edit one (1) of their texts in order to nominate it among the members of their team to participate in the process of selecting the text that will represent the team in subsequent selection instances. This text must have a minimum length of 3000 characters and a maximum of 8000 in the General category, and a minimum length of 1500 characters and a maximum of 4000 in the Kids category.
  28. WARNING! Texts that exceed the maximum character limit (8000 in General category, 4000 in Kids category) may be submitted and, if selected, the author will be responsible for shortening it to the maximum length stipulated according to the category (see points 24. and 25. of the game rules).
  29. Voting and selection of the team's text: Once the editing and nomination stage is completed, each team member will have three days (November 12, 13 and 14) to vote on the text that will represent the team in the following selection stages. Each participant will choose their favorite text (2 points) and their second favorite (1 point). As a result of those votes, the selected text will be defined. The organization is not in charge of the decision, which is the responsibility of each team.
  30. The selected text can be edited after the voting stage to arrive at its best possible version. If it exceeds the limit of valid characters (8000 in the General category, 4000 in the Kids category), it must be shortened, otherwise, the text will not be considered in the successive instances of selection. The organization of the World Cup encourages this editing to be done as a team, although the final decision is up to the author. ATTENTION! The text must include the title and the pen name of the author.
  31. If the team is a mixed team (made up of people over 19 and people up to 18 years old), you can also send a text from one of the players up to 18 years of age to participate in the competition for the best individual text of the Teenagers category.
  32. The texts in all the categories (Kids, Teenagers, General) will be read by a first round of juries made up of specialists, who will choose the texts that will go on to the next selection stage. The texts that pass this selection stage will be considered semifinalist texts. There is no fixed number of semi-finalist texts; this will depend on what the preselection jury determines
  33. In the case of the Kids category, in this instance, the selected texts will be divided into three categories: 6-7-8-9 year olds, 10-11 year olds and 12-13 year olds, and the best texts will be chosen from each one, until five finalists per subcategory reach the final.
  34. The texts selected by the first round of juries will then go through a new selection by a committee of three specialists, who will list, by score, the final selection of the chosen texts in the Kids, General, Teenagers and Poetry categories.
  35. In the Teenagers category, these three specialists will also determine the winners of the category.
  36. A literary translator would translate the finalist texts and poems if necessary if a member of the final jury´s mother tongue were not the language in which the text is written.
  37. The finalist texts in the Kids and General categories will be sent to the respective juries, who will have ten to fifteen days to evaluate and decide their favorites. At the same time, the ten finalists will be published on our social media and at mundodeescritura.com, so that they can be read by the public, who will also be able to vote for their favorite (from the General category). This vote of the public will have the same value as a vote from the members of the jury.
  38. As a result of the vote of the Jury, a list of the finalist texts of the general category will emerge. The team of the author of the winning text will be added 10 (ten) points, the team of the author of the text that obtained the second position, 9 (nine) points, and so on until reaching the tenth, which will add a point for their team.
  39. The final score for each team will be determined as follows: Effectiveness + points obtained for the selected text in prose. Example: if a team is 99% effective, it will have 99 points for that area. If your General category text runs in fourth place, it will score 7 points. The final score of the team will then be 99 + 7 = 106 points.
  40. The top ten teams in each category will be announced according to the scoring system.
  41. The participant who adds the highest number of characters written throughout the writing stage (before the edition of the application stage and before the second edition in the event that his or her text was selected to represent the team), will be the World Cup Scorer. There will be three scorers, one for each category (General, Teenagers and Kids). The top one hundred rankings will be published in the Scorers' Table for each category.

WARNING! The World Cup organization will control the texts of the participants who rise to the top of the Scorers' Table, in order to determine that they were written on that day. Here are examples of behaviors that the organization will not accept as valid:

  • Texts that repeat letters, words or paragraphs in series in such a way that the result of said repetition is to add a greater number of characters will not be accepted.
  • Texts that count with a proportion of spaces over text greater than 25% will not be accepted. That is: the sum of characters without spaces over the sum of characters with spaces must not exceed the value 0.75.
  • Texts copied and pasted from the internet or other platforms will not be accepted.
  • In general, texts that, according to the loyal knowledge and understanding of the organization, yield sufficient elements to deduce that they were not written on that day, that is to say that they contravene the spirit and the basic rule of the World Cup, which consists of having to write texts during that day in particular.
  • In the event that the organization detects any type of cheating, the player will be expelled from the World Cup and will not be able to play again in the future. The team will lose the effectiveness of that player.
  • The World Cup is organized into Divisions. Any team in any division can be a World Cup winner, but the division organization reflects the team's past history.
